Email to Blog

A long standing project. I actually figured out pretty much how to do it with B2/Cafelog, but I’m going to convert everyone at Geek Fishing over to MovableType and restart the project with MovableType. That does mean I have to learn Perl though, so it will take a while. On the other hand, in the last few months, I’m pretty good with PHP, so it’s time to learn the other big programming environment

Project goals are:

  1. For folks who love Blackberrys and Outlook, you should be able to enter a blog entry by just sending email to a magical email address
  2. If the email has attachments like photos, automatically upload them and put the right links in
  3. If the entries include interpolated mail, then split the email entries properly into their own entries.
  4. If the entries are already there, then coalesce them and use categories to thread them
  5. Put a Spam filter on the entry email address as well

Is there any progress with email-to-blog yet? I am looking for a way to email to MT, but apart from Six Apart, your January blog is about the only thing I can find.

I haven’t tried to get it to work with PHP. My hoster (tqhosting.com) has both Perl and PHP. I don’t know Perl, but everyone says I have to learn it, so I guess this is the excuse. Plus MT is written in Perl anyway.

Have you had any luck on getting this to work with PHP? I’ve tried installing a Perl version on my blog but my server doesn’t have the latest version. Plus I’m more familiar with PHP. Please email me if you have any info. Thanks.

There’s a perl implementation of this very thing at scottfallin.com called, appropriately enough, pop3-to-MT.

Any update on this project Rich? I’ve tried everyone else’s efforts in this domain and I have yet to find someone who has cracked it in a neat and effective way. If you can get a POP3 to MT link working using PHP then you’re on to a winner! 🙂

Thanks for the tip, Gary. I forgot about that. It is really nice that most folks support that API. That means the work done will support blogger, b2 cafelog, etc.
OK, I’ve got motivation now. Appreciate the pointer.

You don’t need to learn perl. Just about any language will do because because Moveable Type supports the Blogger API. The Blogger API is layered on XML-RPC which is in turn layered on XML and HTTP. If a language can manipulate text and talk TCP, then it can talk the Blogger API.
Search Google for “blogger api <insert-the-language-of-your-choice-here>” to find out how to call the Blogger API from your language.
