Well since I’m installing windows machines, nothing like trying to figure out the standard software to use. If you don’t want to pay Adobe, give GIMP a try. it is a freeware utility and with UFRaw, it will edit and convert Raw format. The only glitch is that UFRaw is 32-bit only, so you have to futz with it to get it to work. Here are the steps:

1. Download and install GIMP.
2. Download UFRaw
3. Install it into c:\program files\gimp 2\32 (not ufraw subdirectory)

This should allow it to run UFRaw (if you don’t need to edit) and it will convert to RAW for you and then you can adjust things as needed:

1. Open the RAW file with UFRaw
2. Click on the Save icon to save it. It doesn’t have a menu bar, so you have to hunt for an icon that looks like a disk 
3. Alternatively, you can start GIMP and then when you open a .RAW or a .NEF, then the UFRaw plugin starts.
