Yikes, amazing how computers can just kind of fail when they are not tended to. Here are my problems:

  1. The Synology DS-1812+ lost a 3TB Seagate hard drive. Amazingly Seagate has a warranty program and for the cost of shipping one way you can get a replacement. However, I only had a 4TB spare (you need lots of spares when running RAID arrays), so it successfully used that for the RAID-6 array
  2. DroboPro. It lost a 3TB drive too. I’ve noticed that it has bugs where it thinks drives are dead, so I swapped to the Synology and it showed the drive was dead as well. When I put in the replacement 3TB drive, it said that was fine, but then report a 2TB drive as “red” or dead, I replaced that with a 2TB drive I had as spare and then another 2TB drive. So Drobo though 3 drives out of 8 died. I had this problem before and it somehow resolved itself. But now, the array is blinking yellow and green (meaning it is doing a rebuild), the Drobo Dashboard reports 300 hours to repair (?!!) and after a day or so, it has dropped off the network. Man, it sure feels like the software has failed. I will leave it thinking for a while, but I’m sure glad I’ve duplicated all the content across two raid arrays as I’m pretty sure, when I reboot it, the array will have crashed. Argh!
  3. Also the Mac Mini that runs it doesn’t shutdown properly anymore. It hangs on shutdown, so maybe need to rebuild that one too. Argh!
  4. Mac Mini running XBMC reports XBMC can’t connect to network share. Deleting XBMC doesn’t help. It now reports XBMC is corrupt from a fresh download. I’m deleting the user data as suggest below. This turns out to be a bug with the latest XBMC (failed on Frodo 12 and 12.2), Turns out that browsing is broken, so instead of selecting SMB, you have to type in Add Network Location and you have to know where it is. The problem is that server browsing is now broken for password protected shares. Argh. Note i don’t use AFP on XBMC, it seems to not to automatic reconnects. It seems to me that something broke with SMB browsing. In the end, I just am using the Mac itself to do a connection to it, but I’m betting this has something to do with an update I did to Synology since it is the browse master for itself and seems to not like XBMC any more 🙁

To completely uninstall XBMC, or to preform a fresh reinstall, you will need to delete the userdata folder and the containing XBMC home folder that holds the userdata folder, in addition to deleting/uninstalling the XBMC application.

Upgraded to the latest version of XBMC and found that you can’t access any SMB shares?
You’re not alone.  Loads of people are reporting that either their computers aren’t appearing in XBMC under the Windows Network section, or that they receive an “error 2? message when they try to access the windows network.
Turns out that password protection on your share could be to blame, the easiest thing to do is manually add the shares as detailed here:
