OK, here are the ways to get XBMC (and its various Airplay, DLNA input drivers) on:
Raspberry Pi.

  • RaspXBMC needs a hard-wired network connection and I have an EDImaxx USB wireless dongle. Argh. But at least it boots.
  • OpenElec  needs a .img image on an SD card. Mrpfister has some great hints including how to get the Edimaxx wi-fi to work (you must have a non-hidden wifi, there can’t be any no spaces in the password or a wired LAN connection, plus lots of performance optimizations are also in there). This seems to work out of the box with the Edimaxx dongle. The install is using the terminal windows using the dd command to get the .img file onto your SD card. Boot the card and you should see the XBMC user interface or you can ssh into the device with user name root and password of openelec.
  • However Airplay doesn’t seem to work in that you can see the device with Air Parrot for instance, but you can’t stream a video
  • Another choice is NOOBS which has rPi, RaspXMBC in a 1.2G Zip and there is an rplay which is a proprietary application but does allow mirroring

Mac OS X

  • While vanilla XBMC on Mac seems to support Airplay audio and vido  (but not Airplay Mirroring),
  • In order to push Airplay out, this works out of the box for late model (2011 or later) Macs, but if you have an older one, get Air Parrot

Atom with GMA 500. The drivers are the main issue here and two ways XBMCbuntu and Openelec.

  • XBMCbuntu appears to support only AMD Fusion and nVidia, while Openelec also support the funky Intel GMA graphics and wouldn’t boot after a unetbootin install on a USB key from the Mac.
  • Need to try OpenElec on the this Atom at some point.
