When you are a support guy trying to figure out an unfamiliar LAN that the last guy didn’t document, hyou need some sniffing tools to figure out what is going on:

Here are some from “What is the best LAN sniffer?”:http://www.governmentsecurity.org/archive/t7343.html and they recommend:

* “Ettercap”:http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/ is a network sniffer and there is a “windows binary”:http://www.xatrix.org/download.php?id=18&r=1 The install fails though looking for a DLL.
* “Cain and Abel”:http://www.nwcet.org/downloads/cainAbel.pdf#search=%22Cain%20and%20Able%20lan%22 This is a network password recovery tool that you can downloadat “oxid.it”:http://www.oxid.it/cain.html.
* “Ethereal”:http://www.ethereal.com/. I’ve used this before, it is a packet sniffer
