Ok this is so silly but if you are traveling v through SE Asia here are some tips:
- US Mobile. Wow what a plan. It’s $32/mo if you buy annual so way cheaper than the big three. Plus if tour are in the US, you can switch to Warp which is Verizon and get a free Apple Watch contract. And if you travel, you can for free switch to Dark star which AT&T (does anyone get the reference to the Deathstar and the att logo?) this give you talk and text plus 10GB/month in singapore, 10GB data in Hongkong, Taiwan and Vietnam.
- MAKE SURE TO TURN DATA ROAMING ON. this is the dumb ass thing I missed. It’s pretty buried now. Go to setting > cellular > eSIMs > Darkstar > Turn this line on. And you think you’re done. But no. Look down and you will see data roaming is off by default. Sigh. And turn on WiFi calling which is also off.
- Klook. Now if you don’t have a great plan then go to Klook which is a pretty good se Asia carrier and for $15 you can get a SE Asia plan which is $15 for 10GB. This is service that you also have to set to roaming. I was confused because I activated it in Hong Kong and it just worked.
- Local Sim. The cheapest but most hassle is to buy a sim in each country. So in Vietnam it’s $16 to get a local phone number and unlimited data for 30 days. You don’t need to worry about roaming Flaky thing is that regular texting doesn’t work outbound but dies inbound is the only glitch.
