When trying to get some music for a personal video, I discovered that many of the songs that I had previously uploaded to Apple Music were “lost”, so I was actually using the Apple Music subscription. I had been using Apple Music to “store” these files.
One of the great deals that Steve Jobs (RIP) cut was that if you have a CD and you upload it into Apple Music, then iCloud would “match” it and then on your next download would gives you an AAC or AIFF lossless file. But somehow that catalog was lost.
So here is what I had to do:
- Figure out where you have those MP3s or CDs, and upload them to Apple Music
- Then turn on “iCloud Status” in the Songs view to see what is going on. You should ideally upload and then get “Matched” in that field, and you are set.
However, in uploading these files, I found that a bunch of these said “Error,” which means the upload and comparison failed (I’m pretty sure it is not doing an upload but some sort of fingerprinting), so how do you fix this?
Well, the short answer is that you select all the Songs that are in “Error” mode, then right-click and choose “Add to Library”, and this starts the process.
I made the mistake of selecting all songs and choosing “Add to Library” and now it is resyncing my *entire* library. Argh!
Note that some may be greyed and not matched because there isn’t a rights deal with Apple, but at least you get your MP3s up there.
